When we keep difficult feelings inside, they can begin to feel heavier. We may replay situations repeatedly in our minds, question ourselves or feel that nobody would understand.
Speaking openly to someone who is fully present can reduce this sense of isolation. It can be reassuring to know that your feelings matter and that you do not have to carry everything alone.
For some people, being listened to may be a new experience. Perhaps they grew up feeling that their emotions were unimportant, were encouraged to remain strong or learned to place other people’s needs before their own. Over time, this can make it difficult to recognise or express what they truly feel.
Counselling offers an opportunity to experience a different kind of relationship, one in which your thoughts, feelings and experiences are given time and attention.
