Putting Feelings Into Words

Emotions can sometimes feel confusing, especially when several feelings are present at once. You might feel angry but also hurt, relieved but also guilty, or anxious without fully understanding why.

Talking can help you organise what feels tangled inside. As you begin putting your experiences into words, you may notice connections between your thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

For example, you may recognise that certain situations remind you of an earlier experience or that you have developed ways of coping that once protected you but no longer feel helpful. This understanding is not about blaming yourself or remaining stuck in the past. It is about developing greater awareness of how your experiences may be affecting you today.

When we understand ourselves more clearly, we are often better able to respond with compassion instead of criticism.
